Summary

Cable and satellite television are still prominent for many users, but declining each year. In streaming providers are providing broadcast TV, but are looking for ways to differentiate add value compared to other services.  Finding what is on TV Is a manual, scrolling process that hasn’t changed much in 50 years. Some providers include search features capabilities but those are mostly four on demand or are difficult to use for broadcast channels.

Oh the how are idea our idea is to improve the guide listings for both cable slash satellite and streaming live TV providers come on it will be more useful and customizable for viewers keeping them happier with their service, will provide a selling point for streaming services, and will provide New York preference information back to providers and networks that can be an additional source of income for the TV provider.

Improvements – Details

Order the Guide

Allow users to order the channel guide however they would like regardless of the channel number. So viewers put their favorite channel first, their next channel second, etcetera. Then as they’re scrolling through the guide they’re seeing all their favorites at the beginning making it easier to find something they’re looking for. This is a super easy change and will be easily adaptable for viewer because they do this already in so many other places like sorting in excel, or organizing their favorites on their phone, in multiple other very similar places.

Also allow for a starting step of saying who the user is, similar to HBO selecting user screen.

This also allows the provider to get additional information on favorite channels and that could be compared to viewing patterns or combined with demographic data.

Give Users Options to Make the Guide Their Own

Create a user driven guide that is fully customizable for each viewer, adding customization features like color coding different types of shows or highlighting new shows versus reruns, changing font color and size, allowing for multiple users per household, each with their own guide, and improving the search features currently available.

The basic guide will look exactly the same as current, therefore users viewers that don’t want to do the customization still get exactly what they had before with no changes or learning curve. The only difference will be that the outside of the guide will show the customization options if viewers want to use them.

Features include letting the customer highlight things they want to see specifically (like highlight sports in green or home improvement shows in blue), similar to outlook coloring of different types of meetings. Or, green = shows they love, yellow = meh, and red = shows they hate.

This will also generate ideas for improvement, by monitoring how viewers customized their interface.

Improve Search Functionality

Some guides contain small pieces of good search functionality, but no guide does it really well. Our search improvements will include the best parts of all guide searches including:

  • Search for show name
  • Search for actor name
  • Search for genre, like romcom or sci-fi
  • Combining multiple searches, IE Harrison Ford in a TV show ROM com

The search results all include the ability to mark the search results the match the guide feature changes listed above.

Financials

Using Hulu as an example of a company that could develop this and estimate the revenue benefit to them. There are 2 revenue categories from these improvements:
• The revenue added because more people sign up because of the new features
• The revenue saved because more people stay with the service longer

Subscriber Revenue
With just a 1% improvement in both adding subscribers and reducing churn, will generate slightly over $1,000,000 of additional subscriber revenue per year.

Notes and Assumptions

  • Hulu+ Live TV – 4.1 Million subscribers
  • Price per month $70 per month (Blended rate). Source Hulu.com, blended rate is combination of additional cost to add Live TV to a Hulu package.
  • HULU churn 67,000 per month (Per Variety)
  • Per Industry sources, they added a net of 300,000 last year, Calculated, they would need to add 700,000, minus 400,000 lost equals a net gain of 300,000
